LANSING, Mich. — The Lansing Economic Development Corporation (Lansing EDC), an organization dedicated to driving Lansing’s economic vitality, today announced Kris Klein as its next president and CEO effective July 2025, following the retirement of Karl Dorshimer. Klein, who has served as vice president of the Lansing EDC since 2022, will focus on cultivating new partnerships and strategies that link business and community across Lansing.
As vice president of the Lansing EDC, Klein led cross-sector partnerships, redevelopment strategies and impactful incentive programs to support business growth and real estate development, notably Lansing Shuffle, Grewal Hall and Moneyball Sportswear headquarters. Since 2022, the organization has supported nearly 1,200 new multi-family housing units and secured more than $20 million in grants and public infrastructure funding. Prior to the Lansing EDC, Klein spent five years at the Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP), where he most recently served as director of economic development.
Klein will lead the Lansing EDC through one of the most dynamic chapters in the city’s history. With numerous development projects underway, he will spearhead efforts that position the city as a positive first impression for Michigan, ensuring it reflects the strength and vibrancy of the entire state. Klein plans to prioritize strategic planning (setting a bold, inclusive roadmap that reflects current issues like housing, equitable development and population growth/talent retention), as well as shaping development opportunities to meet local economic challenges.
“This is a transformational moment for Lansing,” said Klein. “We’re laying the groundwork now that will not only redefine the city’s skyline, but its future trajectory. I’m honored to continue the incredible momentum we’ve built, and am grateful for Karl’s leadership, which made so much of this possible. The foundation is set, and we’re ready to rise.”
During Dorshimer’s tenure, the Lansing EDC led numerous projects such as carrying out four Corridor Improvement Authorities, supporting the LG Energy Solution project (formerly Ultium) and overseeing the Lansing Equitable Economic Development Initiative. Dorshimer played a critical role in bringing notable Lansing EDC projects to fruition, such as AF Group headquarters, Knapp’s Centre, the Outfield, Block 600/Capital City Market, Red Cedar developments and, most recently, New Vision Lansing downtown. Klein will continue to oversee current initiatives.
“Kris Klein has long been a driving force behind the Lansing Economic Development Corporation’s success, and the Board is thrilled to see him step into the role of president and CEO,” said Jonathan Smith, Lansing EDC board member. “His deep knowledge of the region, proven leadership and unwavering commitment to inclusive growth make him the ideal person to lead the organization into its next chapter. We’re grateful for the steady hand of retiring CEO Karl Dorshimer and are confident that Kris will continue to build on that strong foundation.”
